Tigers Struggle to Turn Things Around

Posted on: April 12, 2008 1:40 pm

After a dismal 0-7 start, the Detroit Tigers are beginning to show some offensive life. They have won 2 of the last 3 games and have scored 18 runs over that three game period. Recall that they had only scored 15 runs in the first seven games total. Everyone with the exception of Pudge Rodriguez contributed to the hit parade in the Friday night game against Chicago, racking up 5 runs and 11 hits. Although it was a cold, rainy and blustry evening, the Tiger bats kept everything warm in the Tiger dugout, instead of Jim Leyland's chain smoking habit.

The pitching suffered a setback with the hyper-extended knee that Dontrelle Willis experienced only a few pitches into the game but, this time the bullpen really did come to the rescue. Lopez, Grilli, Bautista and Jones combined in the rest of the game to shut down the White Sox with 1 run, 3 hits, 2 walks and 10 strikeouts. A masterful 9 innings topped off by Tod Jones 1st save of the year. The 1st run of the game is attributed to D. Willis before leaving the game.

This by no means says that the Tigers worries are over but, it certainly is something more of what the Tiger fans have been expecting and it will for the moment reassure us that the Tigers do have the capability of being the team that we all thought they would be in Spring training.

Most people are still laughing about the Tigers "08" start. That may be so, here in early April, 10 games into the season but, as someone who has followed the Tigers for many years, watching as this pool of talent has been recruited and developed, I am confident that such a sobering start will only reinforce the determination and will of this current roster of players to persevere and overcome in the long haul, game by game, series by series until they achieve the goal of AL Central Champs, followed by AL Champs and finally (we hope) World Series Champs in "08".

Go Tigers!

Tigers Struggle to Turn Things Around

What is a plus for the Tigers, is that the Indians are doing almost as badly to start the season.  They are 4-7, only two games ahead of the Tigers.  Once Granderson returns, that will help.  I think they really miss him at the top of the lineup.  But their pitchers better start pitching much better if they are going to make a run at the making the playoffs.

Tigers Struggle to Turn Things Around

Ok, sure as I compliment the Tigers on their improved performance of late, they go and make me look foolish by getting two hit by the White Sox 7-0 on Saturday afternoon. Verlander actually pitched quite well through the seventh inning, only allowing the HR to Cabrera and one other hit. In the eighth inning, It looked as if Verlander lost all control and feel for the ball. He was at the 97 pitch count by then and should have been pulled by Leyland in that lousy 40 degree weather. The game was close at 1-0 and maybe a fresh arm would have kept them in it. Needless to say though it was the collapse of the offense, once again that did them in.

I am beginning to see a correlation between cold weather and the lack of Tiger production. It happened in the "06" World Series against St. Louis. They were off for a week, waiting for the NL representative and the cold weather arrived with the series, effectively shutting the Tigers down. Here again, they have been playing in marginal playing conditions at the beginning of the season with temps ranging from the 30's to the 50's and they have been ineffective under those conditions. They were seemingly fine in Florida, hitting the ball well, even if the pitching was behind a bit. Temps and weather in the south were much more favorable to playing baseball.

The Tigers may be one of those teams which does not react well to cold weather and inclement conditions. Some people can thrive and play well in the cold and some cannot. It may be that the Tigers have a few more players who play better when it is sunny and warm as compared to raining and cold. Just an observation, not an excuse. Other teams do not seem to have a problem. However, New York, Boston and Cleveland have not started well under similar conditions. Is there a parallel?

All analysis aside, at this point patience is called for while we await the last blast of winter in the North. The nagging minor injuries must also be attended to. Granderson's return will be a welcome addition and possibly a spark for the offense. At this point I am glad they kept Inge this long. He has contributed mightily to the offense they have managed to produce.

As for pitching, aside from Robertson's inexplicable collapse so far, and Willis' continuing struggles for control, I am encouraged by the pitching I have seen from Bonderman, Rogers and Verlander. The guys need to get them more support which will come in time. I just hope it is not too late before it arrives.

A hearty, Go Tigers! As always.

Tigers Struggle to Turn Things Around

I hate to sound panicked only twelve games into the season, but I am definitely thinking something is seriously wrong twelve games into the season.  I just don't see things changing anytime soon.  This team has to have set the record for hitting into the most double plays in their first 12 games.  I think they probably now have the record for most times shutout in the first 12 games.  What is it now, 5 or 6 shutouts  in 12 games?  This team?  Their approach to hitting is the worst.  They swing at too many first pitches, and as a result hit lazy fly balls or get behind in the count.  I think they have yet to get an opponent's starter into a high pitch count through 5 or 6 innings.  Who expected this team to be the worst offensive team in baseball at any point in the season?

Granderson's return will help, but it won't matter much when he gets on base and the next guy grounds into a DP.  The pitching can't be blamed yet, although it has not been anything close to average or consistent.  Example:  Rogers has a 3.3 ERA (before today), is now 0-3.  The offense isn't scoring enough to let a pitcher with a 1.5 ERA  win, much less this pitching staff.  Something has to change quick or we will be looking at a mangerial change by June 1.  With the second highest payroll in the game, they are headed for the opposite 1984 team  start : 5-35!  Think about it.  This scenario is extremely possible, and right now I think probable.  This is beyond frustrating.

Tigers Struggle to Turn Things Around

Yes, I agree. The team is in a tailspin. The dismal offensive performance continues to dismay the most loyal fan. What seemed like maybe the beginnings of an offensive emergence a couple of days ago has certainly fallen flat. 0 runs and 11 hits in 2 games will not cut it.

As a loyal Tiger fan, I sure hope that Jim Leyland and his Coaches select can figure out what to do about soon. Patience is a virtue and I have loads of that but, I sure do not want to go through another 119 loss season with my favorite team. It is not a lot of fun.

35-5, I never even considered. 5-35 to start, I never even contemplated, it was not possible. I'll settle for competitive baseball and everyone having fun and giving it their all on the field. How about a team that's in contention from start to finish. That is at least interesting.

This is just...unfathomable!

A half hearted...Go Tigers! How about it guys?

Tigers Struggle to Turn Things Around

Here's a stat I heard that demonstrates what I am talking about.  In Sunday's game against the White Sox, from innings 6 through 8, the Sox pitcher or pitchers threw 21 pitches.  And not a single pitch was a ball!  It went something like strike pop out, strike strike strike, foul ball ground out, strike strike strike, you get the picture.  Unbelievable.  This is the game after which Leyland chewed their butts out.  They lost 11-0, and Kenny Rogers is now 0 and 3.  But the Tigers have been shut out in every one of his starts, so Kenny doesn't have a chance.  The good part of this horrible start is that Cleveland isn't much better at all and Chicago is five games ahead of the Tigs after winning 5 of 6 from Detroit.  If the season series evens out then things will be OK.  Maybe last night's game will change the approach at the plate now, when they put good swings on the ball and made the Twins pitchers work, and eventually got to the opponent's relief corps and wore them out.

Tigers Struggle to Turn Things Around

Do you think that maybe Leyland got through to the guys finally? After 23 scoreless innings, the Tigers bust loose with a 16 hit attack and score 11 runs against the Twins in their first meeting erasing a 9-4 deficit to win the game 11-9. Then, to reassure the fans that this is not just a fluke, they come back the next night and pummel the Twins pitching with 4 Home Runs in another comeback win 6-5. Are we seeing the real Tigers beginning to emerge from the ashes of the first 2 weeks of the season? Let us hope so.

Go Tigers!
