Detroit Tiger Observations

I always hear around the cooler on any given day by the casual Detroit Tiger fan, or by the fans of a major Tiger rival why, on that particular day or at that particular time the Tigers are going to break out of their slump and finally make a run at greatness, like they were supposed to on paper at the beginning of the season or not. Well, the definitive time for anything like that to happen may not be all that photographically noticeable except over an extended period of time. Maybe if you could take a time lapsed shot on successive days to capture the essense of the change. Well, maybe.

Anyway, simply put the mastermind behind this monsterously hard to figure out team does seem to have a plan and it may actually be on the verge of showing some positive results with more to come. The three game series with the Mariners was a blessing in disguise. It gave the team a stretch of three games where they could play baseball with the least amount of pressure to bear. The offense got some much needed BP, the Pitching got some much needed work without the normal rat race stress of playing against division rivals. In short, the guys could have some fun and relax a bit for more than a day. It will pay off down the line in rejuvenation of purpose and confidence. it shows already.

Mr. Leyland is no dummy. With the less than stellar realization that nothing goes like it looks on paper and man, has it really train wrecked this year early. Jim has needed to establish a rythm and routine of work ethic in the team. That has not been easy to do early on especially with all the injuries sustained by the team to key contributors. However, as of late the pitching has been working to strict schedule. No starters going more than 6 innings and then the bullpen working the final three for the outcome. The starters for the most part, have been reasonably effective. Nobody is stellar at their job but, they are at least not giving away the farm anymore. With the steady rotation has come some better pitching performances of late. Also, both Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya are once again throwing in Florida. That is at least a good sign for the near future that the staff will once again be bolstered for the second half. Dontrelle Willis is back but, whether that is a good thing remains to be seen.

In the last seven games the Tigers are 5-2-0, outscoring their opponents 56-32, the resurrgent offense averaging 8 runs a game during the last week and the opposition scoring between 4-5. This may be what Leyland had in mind all the time. The Tigers could always be contenders in the Central as long as the offensive power of the team backed up a mediocre pitching staff that could keep the opponents in check relatively speaking. Leyland may have envisioned a Tiger club that won by attrition more than not. It may still be possible to salvage the season and the Central Division title. Just playing .600 or slightly better gets them 89-90 wins. That can win the Central. They are only back 5 1/2 right now.

I remember the 1984 Tigers and their phenomenal start of 35-5-0 and then their lackluster ride to the finish. It was exciting to watch at the beginning of the year and it became a little more interesting as their huge lead almost dwindled away. Yet they finished to take it all against San Diego that year in the World Series. This year has been excruciating to watch at the beginning, as the team with so much promise has tanked the first two months. It will be a pleasure to watch as they crawl out of the pit they have dug for themselves with the questionable talent available, to triumph above so many in the end.

So say we all! Tiger fans to the glorious end!

Tigers Struggle to Turn Things Around

After a dismal 0-7 start, the Detroit Tigers are beginning to show some offensive life. They have won 2 of the last 3 games and have scored 18 runs over that three game period. Recall that they had only scored 15 runs in the first seven games total. Everyone with the exception of Pudge Rodriguez contributed to the hit parade in the Friday night game against Chicago, racking up 5 runs and 11 hits. Although it was a cold, rainy and blustry evening, the Tiger bats kept everything warm in the Tiger dugout, instead of Jim Leyland's chain smoking habit.

The pitching suffered a setback with the hyper-extended knee that Dontrelle Willis experienced only a few pitches into the game but, this time the bullpen really did come to the rescue. Lopez, Grilli, Bautista and Jones combined in the rest of the game to shut down the White Sox with 1 run, 3 hits, 2 walks and 10 strikeouts. A masterful 9 innings topped off by Tod Jones 1st save of the year. The 1st run of the game is attributed to D. Willis before leaving the game.

This by no means says that the Tigers worries are over but, it certainly is something more of what the Tiger fans have been expecting and it will for the moment reassure us that the Tigers do have the capability of being the team that we all thought they would be in Spring training.

Most people are still laughing about the Tigers "08" start. That may be so, here in early April, 10 games into the season but, as someone who has followed the Tigers for many years, watching as this pool of talent has been recruited and developed, I am confident that such a sobering start will only reinforce the determination and will of this current roster of players to persevere and overcome in the long haul, game by game, series by series until they achieve the goal of AL Central Champs, followed by AL Champs and finally (we hope) World Series Champs in "08".

Go Tigers!

Tigers off to rough start

The drivel I am reading about how the Tigers suck, have no bull pen, have just average starting pitching and have an offensive team which is overated,...is just that, plain drivel.

So, they have started 0-5 this year. I think Jim Leyland is a bit disappointed with the way they have played thus far, and yes it is unfortunate that they have already suffered a few minor injury setbacks but, I do not believe for a minute that this team is going to tank the season in week 1.

It may be that they have been pushing just a bit too hard under the mantle that has been placed on them since the beginning of spring training of the "best team in baseball" and "the team to beat". I see a lot of nervous energy on the Tiger team which is not being utilized properly. The guys do not seem to be focused on playing as a team but, instead they are trying hard not to look bad as individuals on the playing field. They are not working together very well. I have every confidence in Jim Leyland to harness that energy and tune the baseball machine. It will take that first solid victory and game performance to turn things in the right direction.

Had this 5 game losing streak happened in the middle of the season, no one would have taken notice...much. Because it is at the beginning of the season, it seems to be much more than it really is, an abberation of Tiger confidence, or lack there of.

I for one would not like to be on the receiving end of the team's frustration and angst when they finally do come out of this funk and turn up the rpm's. I am also sure there are other managers of their future opponents who are thinking the same thing.

Go Tigers! No hope lost, that is why we play 162 regular season games.
